I find this a handy way to hold large assemblies while sanding or finishing on a workbench. Assemble and place pipe clamps with two pads turned up and two down, as shown in the drawing. If your clamps are too short for the width of bench, put two together with a threaded coupling.
Tighten the lower clamps to a work surface, rest the assembly on the pipes, and tighten the upper ones. If necessary, block the work up with wooden wedges to make an uninterrupted surface for sanding. If the work is wider than the bench, let the pipe clamps overhang one side - but watch out for a capsize!
